چکیده

Virtual spaces based on the metaphor of "shared network places" are becoming a well accepted implementation approach for multiuser, multimedia, distributed cooperative work environments to support the work activities and interactions of goal oriented business teams. Similar to real-life physical team rooms, which provide a permanent shared space used by a work group, TEAMWORKPLACE, the virtual space presented in this paper, provides a virtual meeting room, i.e. a place to store, retrieve and present multimedia content (documents), to design and construct cooperatively, to brainstorm, to negotiate and make decisions, to run shared applications, to browse enterprise data, or to acquire, formalise and exchange enterprise knowledge. Since physical team rooms rely on the physical proximity of the team members and their easy access to the common work space, this access breaks down when groups are geographically dislocated. For such teams, TEAMWORKPLACE provides the electronic equivalent of a physical team room transcending distance, time zones, and organisational

Thirdspace: The Trialectics of the Real, Virtual and Blended Spaces

This article aims to redefine the concept of Thirdspace and make a trilateral relationship between the three concepts of real space, virtual space and the user. To do so, not only the concept of Thirdspace has to be redefined, but also a new understanding of virtual space as a relatively independent space is required. This three-sided relation requires a new understanding of the relationship be...

Intelligent environments

In this project we will develop the concept of intelligent environments as an interaction paradigm for distributed computing. The development will be based on the following main theoretical concepts: • Physical information spaces • Virtual information spaces • Intelligent environments (where physical and virtual information spaces meet) • Information tokens • Information faucets • Shared, mobil...

A Spatial Model of Interaction in Large Virtual Environments

We present a spatial model of group interaction in virtual environments. The model aims to provide flexible and natural support for managing conversations among large groups gathered in virtual space. However, it can also be used to control more general interactions among other kinds of objects inhabiting such spaces. The model defines the key abstractions of object aura, nimbus, focus and adap...

From Rooms to Cyberspace: Models of Interaction in Large Virtual Computer Spaces

Room metaphors have become increasingly popular as a basis for CSCW systems. This paper describes how such metaphors might be extended to support large scale communication through the introduction of a spatial model for meditating conversations in virtual computer spaces. The model is described in terms of an abstract mathematical framework and the paper then outlines how this might be applied ...

A Platform for Constructing Virtual Spaces

Virtual spaces (worlds) applications are among the most complex of distributed applications. They are both distributed and open. Minimizing network latency, fault-tolerance, persistence, resource control, and security are also important aspects. Designing and implementing virtual spaces is currently difficult in that the already not insignificant complexities of program functionality, distribut...
